VIVS AND SEDS Year: 2025 This is going to be a work in progress, still figuring this out in my mind, but need to dump all the stuff I have so far. Vivs and Seds are at opposite ends of a spectrum or continuum. Viv is short for Convivialists, Sed for Sedentaries. Vivs are most alive when they are working with others, Seds when they have no need to work with others. Vivs are in constant motion, Seds are tied to a particular place. / The inspiration for this binary, came from looking for a way to discuss the differences between nomads and ... everyone who is non-nomadic. It has the weaknesses of all binary typifications, and thus it's usefulness only extends so far. The context for where this thinking comes from, is my now three-year exploration of nomadism and anarchism. I first thought the binary of anarchist and fascist could be useful, but the vast majority of anarchists express no interest in nomadism, so that seemed an ill fit. Something else was needed. And indeed, there are probably other binary categories that are more well established that I just haven't found yet. But for now, I'll go with Vivs and Seds. / Some more inspiration, is the work of Ivan Illich on convivial tools. I wrote an essay recently (https://davidbaunach.com/writings/anarchy.txt) on my understanding of anarchism in a Christian context, and considered that jumping off from the work of Illich, Christian anarchists could use 'convivialist' to better typify themselves. Since we necessarily allow for one hierarchy (though I would debate that terminology), even though the remainder of anarchism is still open to us, (and indeed, most of it is taught by Christ), we need a way to indicate we understand we're doing something different. Thus, Vivs and Seds. ---fin---
